ABOUT THE Gloucestershire Old Spot pig

Originating around the Berkeley Vale on the southern shore of the River Severn, the Gloucestershire Old Spot is a large breed known for its white coloration, typically featuring a minimum of one distinct black spot. Mature pigs of this breed have lop ears that cover most of their face and hang towards the nose.

Renowned for its hardiness, the Gloucestershire Old Spot can adapt to various conditions and is recognized as an excellent forager. With an average litter size of around 9 piglets in 2009, the breed exhibits good maternal instincts and is known for its gentle nature.

Sows of the Gloucestershire Old Spot breed weigh approximately 280 kg, while boars weigh around 350 kg. They possess broad and deep bodies, showcasing their white color with distinctive black spots and large lop ears.

The Gloucestershire Old Spot is highly regarded for the quality of its meat, making it a dual-purpose breed suitable for both pork and bacon production. Due to its historical presence in orchards, the breed has acquired the nickname of ‘The Orchard pig,’ and there is a legend that the black spots on their bodies are bruises from falling apples.

Overall, the Gloucestershire Old Spot is a breed with a rich heritage originating from the Berkeley Vale region and its association with orchards.
