Barbary Macaques, belonging to the Cercopithecidae family, are renowned as “old world monkeys” and are naturally found in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Here are some fascinating facts about Barbary Macaques:

Barbary Macaques are the sole species of Macaques that inhabit regions outside of Asia.
Their name is derived from the Barbery Coast of North West Africa.
On the Rock of Gibraltar, approximately 250 Barbary Macaques reside.
They form troops that can consist of as many as 100 individuals.
These remarkable creatures are exceptionally resilient, adapting well to both arid, hot climates and cold environments.
They possess sizeable cheek pouches capable of storing food equivalent to the capacity of their stomachs

At Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, we are fortunate to care for three Barbary Macaques named Adao, Sisi, and Ndidi. These individuals undertook a journey spanning over 200 miles from a rescue center in The Netherlands, where they were saved from lives of neglect.

It is crucial to acknowledge that this endangered species faces significant challenges such as habitat loss and the perils of the pet trade. By providing a safe haven for these Barbary Macaques, we strive to contribute to their conservation and raise awareness about their plight.
