ABOUT THE Embden Goose
The Embden Goose is considered one of the oldest domestic goose breeds, with a documented history dating back approximately 200 years. While the precise origin of this breed remains unclear, there is a belief that it was developed through the crossbreeding of the German white and English white geese.
It’s important to note that not all white geese can be classified as Embdens. Many commercial varieties of white geese exist, but these are typically smaller in size and have been selectively bred for commercial purposes, making them easier to reproduce.
The history of the Embden breed traces its roots to Germany, although it has gained popularity in both the United Kingdom and the United States. In fact, it was among the first goose breeds to be standardized in the UK, with the official standard established in 1865. It’s worth mentioning that the Embden geese found in the UK differ from the standard-bred birds in Germany, as they tend to be significantly heavier in weight.
