ABOUT THE Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur
The Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur is a critically endangered species that is found in the wild in eastern rainforests of Madagascar.
Typically ranging in length from 100-120cm, weighing 3-4kg and living in the high canopies, their diet is mainly fruit based (frugivorous).
Like our Ring-Tailed Lemurs, Black-and-White Lemurs are quite vocal to communicate and are female dominant.
About our Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur
Our Black-and-White Ruffed Lemurs were rescued alongside our Ring-tailed Lemurs. As both species were living together before they came to Jimmy’s Farm we have kept them together. Both species get on well although our rangers have observed that the Black and White Ruffed Lemurs have dominance over the Ring-Tailed Lemurs.
The group had a poor diet before they arrived here, being fed high calorie food that’s not suitable for them. As a result they were overweight and our rangers have been working on getting them adjusted to the right food and bringing their weight down naturally.
A Madagascan Home
We have built a new home for our lemurs to make them feel at home, turning our Butterfly House in to a Madagascan exhibit.
Did you know
Ruffed Lemurs build their nests in trees and are the only primate to do so.
Their diet is mainly fruit & nectar.
Lemurs have two tongues. The primary tongue is used for eating and the secondary tongue is used for grooming & cleaning.
