Tobias, our lowland tapir, turns 1!
To celebrate his special first birthday the ranger team organised a birthday party complete with birthday cake and presents.
Tobias was born in 2018 and was Suffolk’s first baby Tapir!
When Tapir are born, they are a light brown colour and covered in stripes. This helps them to camouflage in the wild. Now Tobias is one, he has lost his stripes.
Lowland tapir is an endangered South American mammal that can be found in mountains and rainforests.
Tobias will leave us soon to go to another collection. He will hopefully have a family of his own one day and continue the population of this endangered species.
Did you know the tapir’s closest relatives are horses and rhinoceros? They are semi – aquatic mammals and spend a large amount of their time in the water. They will eat aquatic plants, bathe, mate and go to the toilet in water!
