Happy Earth Day!
This year’s theme is to invest in our planet.
One way we’re investing in our planet is by not only protecting endangered exotic species such as Lowland Tapir and Black and White Ruffed Lemurs but also our British rare breeds like Norfolk Horn Sheep.
Climate change is having an impact on many endangered animals, by destroying habitat and making it harder for them to find food.
The Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur is classed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN meaning there is an extremely high risk they will be extinct in the wild.
These lemurs live in the rainforest of Madagascar and, as the rainforest is shrinking, it’s harder for them to find places to live. They spend most of their lives in trees and are the only primate to build nests in their trees to leave their young in.
We hope that by being part of a breeding programme we can help build the population of this critically endangered species and ensure they are still around for future generations to see!
When you visit us, why not take the time to read our information signs and learn about the special animals that call our park home, their habitat in the wild and why they are threatened.

They do this through a programme of monitoring, saving and promoting the breeding & registration of rare and native breeds. Jimmy is also delighted to be the Vice-President of the RBST.
