ABOUT THE Riggit Galloway cattle
The Galloway breed displays a range of body colors, including black, blue/black, red, brown, or dun. Their white coloration can manifest as a widened stripe that covers a significant portion of the back, particularly on the hindquarters. Additionally, white markings may be present under the animal’s keel and as flashes among the solid coloration.
In terms of other breed characteristics, Galloways typically exhibit traits similar to more common Galloway types. They are naturally polled, have a medium frame with beef confirmation, and possess a thick ‘dual’ coat that provides insulation. This double-layered coat consists of wavy and curly hair, effectively insulating their bodies and reducing the need for an outer layer of fat. During the summer months or in warmer climates, Galloways shed their coats.
While Galloways are primarily utilized in beef production, historical evidence suggests that Galloway herds were also milked in Cumberland for cheese production.
