ABOUT THE Golden Guernsey Goat

The Golden Guernsey breed of goats possesses a gentle temperament, making them well-suited as household companions. Compared to other milking breeds, they tend to be smaller in size and have delicate bone structure.

Their coats come in various shades of gold, with the option of having small white markings. The goats have prominent ears that point forward, slightly curving upward at the tips. Their facial line is either straight or slightly dished.

The history of Golden Guernsey goats can be traced back to the mention of them in an island Guide Book from 1826. However, it wasn’t until the 1930s that Dr. Tracey, a judge from the British Goat Society, took notice of these exceptional golden goats and encouraged Miriam Milbourne to revive this nearly extinct breed.

Driven by her enthusiasm, Miriam established her L’Ancresse herd and worked diligently to restore the breed’s population. In 1970, a Trust was established to safeguard the remaining stock, which eventually led to the formation of the Golden Guernsey Goat Breed Society.

Successful imports of Golden Guernsey goats took place in 1965, followed by the establishment of a mainland club in 1968. The British Goat Society opened its Golden Guernsey register in 1970, officially recognizing and recording the breed.

The breed was nearly wiped out in the Second World War when most livestock on Guernsey was slaughtered during the German occupation
