Middle White pig

The Middle White is a distinctive breed of pig known for its short nose, which some liken to the appearance of running into a wall!

This hardy pig, like most traditional breeds, requires more shelter compared to some other breeds and may struggle in extreme heat or cold conditions. The average litter size is around 8 piglets, and the breed is recognized for its good maternal instincts. The Middle White exhibits a gentle nature and roots less than other pig breeds, making it suitable for certain outdoor systems and less likely to damage fencing.

In terms of size, the Middle White is a medium-sized breed, with sows weighing approximately 200 kg and boars weighing around 280 kg. They are characterized by their white coloration, snub noses, and large prick ears. The breed has a compact and stocky build compared to many other pig breeds.

In the first half of the 20th century, the Middle White was widely known as the ‘London Porker’ due to the high demand for Middle White pork in the capital. It was a popular choice and was extensively exported. However, as the demand for lean pigs for bacon production increased, the number of Middle Whites in the UK declined.

Fortunately, with a growing interest in quality meat among consumers, the Middle White has experienced a resurgence. Middle White pork has once again established an enviable reputation among customers.
