The Bluebells Are Out!

The Woodland
The woodland first appeared on maps in 1885, named Hill Covert. The word ‘Covert’ suggests that it was woodland to provide cover for game such as pheasant and partridge. An area to the north was not present on maps until the present day suggesting it was planted up from rough pasture in the last fifty years. Post war planting of woodland was common to ensure England was self-sufficient in timber. There are several indicator species of ancient woodland dating from the 17th century. However, the wood has been much altered over time. The most ancient area is likely to be the Alder Carr.
As you enter the woodland, you’ll see an area of traditionally harvested coppice woodland mainly comprising of hazel and sweet chestnut. These give a good crop nuts in autumn and wood for stakes and hurdles. In spring, the floor is alive with the sight of nodding bluebells.
