Celebrate Suffolk Day!
Monday 21st June, is Suffolk Day! This is the perfect chance to celebrate all that gorgeous Suffolk has to offer.
We love the fresh countryside air, rich history and of course, the fantastic native animals!
Check out this video from Jimmy talking about why he loves Suffolk:
Native Suffolk breeds on the Farm
We are delighted to keep four breeds here which are native to Suffolk.
Ixworth Chickens
- This breed was created by Reginald Appleyard in 1931 and was named after the village he was born in, Ixworth!
- The Ixworth chicken only comes in one colour which is white.

Suffolk Sheep
- Our Suffolk ewe is called Barbara! She is a firm favourite with our ranger team and produces lovely lambs.
- This breed of sheep is one of the most frequently used breeds in modern sheep farming.
Suffolk Punch
- This breed of horse is the oldest breed of heavy horse and all modern Suffolk’s descended from one horse in the village of Ufford.
- They are so rare they’re classed as Critically Endangered. Our two sisters, Annie & Annabelle are currently at The Suffolk Punch Trust, as part of a breeding programme with The Suffolk Horse Society, in the hope they will become pregnant and grow the population of this breed.

Large Black
- The Large Black pig is Britain’s only all black breed of pig and a very docile breed.
- It is believed that in the 18th century all black pigs came off a boat from China and docked in Suffolk, as well as Cornwall and bred to be what we know today, the Large Black.
- We have just welcomed a new pedigree registered boar called Chunky, he is with his ‘ladies’ and we hope to welcome piglets soon.
Suffolk produce in the Farm Shop
As well as animals we have produce in The Farm Shop which has come straight from Suffolk. From home-grown fruit and vegetables to our own Jimmy’s Farm ales which are bottled and brewed by Briarbank Brewing Company in Ipswich.
