ABOUT THE Asiatic Black Bear
The Asiatic black bear, also known as the moon bear, is a medium-sized bear native to the forests and mountains of Asia. They are easily recognised by their black coat and distinctive crescent-shaped white or cream marking across their chest. A marking that resembles a moon, giving them their much-loved name, “moon bear.”
Our 5 moon bears spent their lives in captivity as part of South Korea’s bear bile industry. Historically, Asiatic black bears were farmed so that bile could be extracted from their gallbladders for use in traditional medicine.
One of our bears, Bara, had lived at the bear bile farm since 1998.
Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park has become the first organisation to rescue Moon Bears from South Korea’s former bear bile industry and bring them to a new home in Britain. For these five bears, this journey represents something much bigger than a change of location. It is the beginning of a completely new chapter one where they can experience space, choice, enrichment and the opportunity to express their natural behaviours.
Our five Moon Bears are now beginning to discover what life beyond a cage can look like.
WHAT THEY EAT: Omnivores with a varied diet of fruits, nuts, seeds, berries, grasses, roots, insects, honey and, occasionally, small animals.
